The mere thought of cancer can be terrifying for many people. It’s a diagnosis that instills fear and dread, conjuring up worst-case scenarios. However, without firsthand experience or a loved one who has been through it, it’s hard to truly grasp the reality. Thanks to Shannen Doherty’s openness and courage in sharing her raw and honest cancer experience, more people can gain insight into the grueling process of treatment.

Shedding Light on the Journey

Last October, Shannen began documenting her breast cancer journey on Instagram. This was a departure from her usual posts. With her cancer reappearing in 2020 as stage four breast cancer after a remission in 2015, she decided to share her personal story during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Her goal was to shed light on the unglamorous aspects of the journey and educate others about what cancer truly looks like.

“For breast cancer awareness month, I’d like to share more of my own personal journey from my first diagnosis to my second,” she wrote. “Is it all pretty? NO, but it’s truthful. My hope in sharing is that we all become more educated, more familiar with what cancer looks like.”

Overcoming Fear and Turmoil

Shannen’s followers and even those outside her fan base were welcome to join her on the cancer treatment journey. In her Instagram post, she announced the beginning of her radiation treatment, starting with the process of getting fitted for a mask to wear during radiation to her brain. Alongside a caption, she shared her emotional turmoil and admitted her claustrophobia.

“January 12, 2023. On January 5th, my CT scan showed Mets in my brain. Yesterday’s video was showing the process of getting fitted for the mask which you wear during radiation to your brain,” she wrote.

Shannen didn’t shy away from expressing her fears and anxieties. She acknowledged being claustrophobic while emphasizing the significance of the cancer journey and its impact on her life. “January 12, the first round of radiation took place. My fear is obvious. I am extremely claustrophobic and there was a lot going on in my life. I am fortunate as I have great doctors like Dr. Amin Mirahdi and the amazing techs at Cedars-Sinai. But that fear… The turmoil… The timing of it all… This is what cancer can look like.”

The Face of Courage

Shannen continued to share her journey, posting a video prior to her tumor removal and biopsy surgery. She exhibited a mix of bravery and vulnerability, expressing her overwhelming fear and worry about the possible outcomes and the impact on her loved ones.

“January 16, 2023. Surgery,” she wrote. “I had a tumor in my head they wanted to remove and also biopsy. I am clearly trying to be brave, but I am petrified. The fear was overwhelming to me. Scared of all possible bad outcomes, worried about leaving my mom, and how that would impact her. Worried that I would come out of surgery not being myself anymore. This is what cancer can look like.”

Shannen Doherty’s journey gives us a glimpse into the reality of living with and tackling cancer head-on. Her bravery and openness inspire empathy and understanding among her followers and beyond. She reminds us that the face of courage can look different for everyone, but the strength to share our experiences can enlighten and uplift others in their own battles.
