Company Faces Backlash for Embracing an Inclusive Ad Campaign Similar to Bud Light’s Controversy

In 2023, Bud Light’s decision to collaborate with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney created a storm of controversy, especially among its conservative patrons. This decision led to widespread boycotts and protests which resulted in a notable decline in Budweiser’s sales.

The situation escalated further when Alissa Heinerscheid, the former Vice President of Marketing, defended the company’s direction by explaining their intent to shift from a “fratty” beer reputation to one that champions inclusivity.

Despite efforts from CEO Brendan Whitworth to rectify and revamp the brand’s image, the fallout from this controversy dealt a severe blow to its reputation.

More recently, Starbucks found itself amid a similar criticism storm after releasing an advertisement some have labeled as “woke,” akin to the reaction Bud Light faced.

The commercial, which drew attention, depicts a father gradually coming to terms with his transgender daughter’s transition. It highlights a tender moment of acceptance as they bond over a Starbucks beverage bearing her chosen name.

This advertisement, released by Starbucks India, carried the empowering message, “Your name is a reflection of your true self,” promoting individuality and personal expression with the hashtag #ItStartsWithYourName. The campaign was met with mixed reactions: While some applauded Starbucks for its commitment to inclusivity, others criticized the company for allegedly pushing a contentious agenda. This debate mirrors a larger cultural division regarding corporate positions on social matters.
