Life’s journey is full of twists and turns. We might not always see the challenges on the horizon, but it’s important to keep faith that brighter days are ahead.
For Chelsea Hough, the anticipation of meeting her new baby was filled with excitement. Her pregnancy progressed smoothly, and at 36 weeks, she welcomed a baby boy, Karson Jax Hough.
Initially, Karson appeared as a healthy newborn, but unexpectedly, his heartbeat slowed and then ceased. Doctors attempted skin-to-skin contact with Chelsea, which momentarily revived him. Unfortunately, Karson needed a ventilator to support his heart and lungs.
“The only way to describe what has happened is that this beautiful baby boy has suffered two very rare conditions that are completely unrelated to one another. One being unidentifiable as to a cause,” explained Karson’s grandmother, Lisa Hough. Doctors suspected a hemorrhage in Karson’s left temporal lobe, coupled with nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), a rare genetic disorder that leads to a buildup of glycine in the body’s tissues and fluids.
The prospects were grim. Doctors gave little hope for survival and recommended discontinuing life support.
Faced with a heartbreaking decision, the family gathered in prayer and prepared to say their goodbyes, with doctors believing there were only a few minutes left.
As the ventilator was removed, a miracle occurred when Karson began to breathe on his own. This astonished the medical staff, who could only call it miraculous.
“Today, we witnessed a miracle!” Lisa shared wholeheartedly. “We were given 10 minutes after withdrawing intensive care, expecting him not to breathe and that his heart would stop. But God and Karson had different plans!
“I don’t know why I ever felt we were undeserving of a miracle. I’m unsure how much time we have, but for now, we have him here with us, and that’s all that matters,” she continued.
Back at home, Karson made remarkable progress. His weight is normal, and his heart is strong. The dangerous glycine levels in his body have significantly decreased, and he’s defying all odds each day.
We hope for nothing less than continued health and happiness for this wonderful little fighter.
