Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Obama family for their tragic loss

It is with heavy hearts that we send our thoughts and prayers to the Obama family during this difficult time. On Friday morning, Maria Robinson, the mother of Michelle Obama, peacefully passed away at the age of 86. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Maria Robinson was not just a mother but a pillar of strength and support for her family. She was always there for them, offering her unwavering love and nonjudgmental support. No matter how far they had ventured, she welcomed them back home with open arms.

When her son-in-law, Barack Obama, won the presidency in 2008, Maria Robinson became known as the first grandmother of the United States. Michelle Obama herself described her mother as a rock, always there for her no matter the circumstances. Maria’s steady presence brought comfort and stability to their entire family.

During the Obama administration, Maria Robinson was a familiar face in the White House. Although she didn’t seek the spotlight, she attended holiday events and concerts in the East Room while also enjoying quality time with her granddaughters, Sasha and Malia.

The family’s statement beautifully captures the void left by Maria’s passing. They expressed how much they would miss her and the wisdom she shared. They found solace in the belief that she is now reunited with her beloved husband, Fraser, in a place of eternal peace.

Maria Robinson was a cherished figure in Chicago, her hometown, where she lived her entire life. Yet, when her grandchildren needed her in Washington, D.C., she readily moved to the White House in 2009. In this new role as a grandmother, she embraced the opportunity to shower Malia and Sasha with love, just as she did with her other grandchildren.

Born in 1937, Maria Robinson’s roots were deeply intertwined with the South Side of Chicago. She raised her two children, Michelle and Craig Robinson, there as well. Her love and dedication to her family knew no bounds.

In 1960, Maria married Fraser C. Robinson III, who sadly passed away in 1991 due to multiple sclerosis. Moving from the South Side to the White House brought significant changes for Maria. She wasn’t accustomed to being waited on and often insisted on doing her own chores, like laundry.

Despite the grandeur of the White House, Maria found solace in simpler moments. She cherished her time spent in a room just outside her bedroom, with windows overlooking the Washington Monument. Her priorities were clear, and rather than seeking out celebrities, she only requested to meet one person: the Pope.

Many people from all walks of life have paid tribute to Maria Robinson, recognizing her importance in the Obama family’s life. Tennis legend Billie Jean King, who won 39 Grand Slam titles, expressed her condolences and shared a personal connection with Maria from their time spent together at the US Open in 2013.

Another touching tribute came from Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway sensation “Hamilton.” Miranda recalled his nerves before performing at the White House in 2009, but it was Maria’s encouraging smile that gave him the strength to step onto the stage. He expressed his deepest sympathies to the Obama family and assured them of his prayers.

Maria Robinson’s impact reached far and wide, touching the lives of those she encountered. Her love, wisdom, and unwavering support will be cherished and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.
